Case study: FNB Sync

In line with FNB’s drive to fully digitise their business, New Media launched an enterprise social network for their employees, allowing FNBers to engage with content and drive two-way conversations.

We began our journey with FNB in 2007, producing Roots magazine on behalf of the bank at a time when consumer magazines were enjoying high circulation numbers and demand for print magazines in the internal communications space was high. In 2010, Roots was rebranded and redesigned as Siyasiza. The magazine was a hit among employees, enjoying high a take-home rate of 48% and winning two Gold Pearl Awards in New York for writing and design, as well as many local accolades.

The opportunity

In 2018, in line with FNB’s drive to fully digitise their business (CEO Jacques Cilliers’ vision for the bank centred around a “platform strategy”), New Media saw a new future for the bank’s internal comms.

The solution

Our specialist Internal Communications team reimagined Siyasiza as an enterprise social network, hosted within the award-winning FNB Banking app (and also accessible on web), allowing staff to engage with content and drive two-way conversations.

Called Sync, the platform is supported by a content strategy that delivers company news through the lens of tech and trend-focused thought leadership, appealing to FNB’s future-focused, trend-aware employee audience.

The results

Visits to Sync totalled 12 000 at launch in July 2018 and had grown to 27 399 in March 2020. Today, the platform continues to receive upward of 20 000 unique visitors. It has been such a success that it has been rolled out to the entire Retail and Commercial Group at FirstRand, making it the centrepiece of the bank’s internal comms ecosystem.

FNB Sync has been the proud recipient of several local and international accolades. We believe this is a result of a solid partnership and New Media’s commitment to delivering excellent service.”
