New Media’s Head of the Eat Out Restaurant Relief Fund & Food School, Tarryn Corlett, speaks about the impact of lockdown from another perspective and appeals for public donations and support.

When New Media announced at the end of 2019 that its owned brand Eat Out would be opening the Eat Out Food School, no one could have known that all plans would go awry in just a few months when COVID-19 hit South Africa. Instead, New Media launched the Eat Out Restaurant Relief Fund to support restaurants that were using their kitchens to provide food for those in need during the hard lockdown.

The Eat Out Restaurant Relief Fund & Food School project (in partnership with Community Chest of the Western Cape) was born and, almost a year later, the Eat Out Food School opened its doors on 15 February 2021. Despite the many hurdles still being faced by the hospitality industry, 15 enthusiastic youths, who weren’t previously afforded the opportunity to further their education and skill set, enrolled in a fully funded 12-month accredited learnership.

The learnership consists of both theoretical and practical modules to ensure the students gain a full range of skills and understanding to equip them in the workplace. Modules include topics such as hygiene, personal development, customer care, first aid, marketing and social media, food styling, and cooking skills. The students have also been exposed to many exciting classes, such as baking classes in the Lindt Studio and a paella masterclass.

“This is one of the best programmes for learning. We love coming to class to share our ideas with each other, to support one another, and to inspire each other. We have grown so much since the start of the programme. I feel like we are a family. As challenging as things are right now with COVID and the lockdown, it’s good for us as we are learning to adapt, which will work to our advantage in the future.” – Boitumelo Motshegoa, class of 2021
